Ramadan – A holy month for Muslims

In 2010, Ramadan is expected to begin on or around 11th August. It will continue for 30 days and ends with the festival of id on or around 10th of September 2010.The exact dates cannot be determined as they depend on the visibility of hilal (waxing crescent moon following a new moon).
Ramdhan is the month of fasting in which muslims refrain from eating, drinking and sexual activities from dawn until sunset.During Ramadan, Muslims ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, and try to purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds. Ramadan was the month in which the first verses of the Qur'an were revealed to the Islamic Prophet Muhammad. Laylat al-Qadr is considered the most holy night of the year.Muslims believe it to have occurred on an odd-numbered night during the last 10 days of Ramadan. Ramadan ends with Eid ul-Fitr on the 1 of Shawwal.
